How To Compost Kitchen Scraps For Your Garden

May 31, 2024 | Finance and Cents

compost

Composting is super easy and fun! I do it all the time. I compost almost everything that I can.

I save kitchen scraps in a container in my kitchen and then just put them in the compost bin.

Some of the things I have composted:

  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Apple cores
  • Citrus rinds
  • Melon rinds
  • Carrots
  • Onions
  • Herbs
  • Hair clippings (I cut my own hair)
  • Eggshells
  • Egg cartons
  • Coffee grounds

& so much more!

Compost is made up of carbon-rich materials (browns) and nitrogen-rich materials (greens).

There are different recommended ratios of browns to greens.

I probably have a one to one ratio. And I usually just spread the finished compost around plants that would like it, such as rhubarb. And sometimes I mix it into the vegetable beds.
